Legend has it that the US origin of Maine Coon cats began with the mating between a domestic shorthaired cat and a Norwegian Forest Cat brought over by Vikings. Their forever classic appeal is bolstered by their gentleness, which bodes well with individual pet owners and especially families. They are affable yet independent in nature, which allows them to adapt well in homes, so they seem more like a family member, not just another pet. Maine Coon cats are the largest domestic breed, known for shaggy hair, tufted ears, and distinctive muzzle.

Understanding the Investment: The Cost of a Purebred Maine Coon

On average, purebred Maine Coon cats cost between $2,500 and $5,000. You may think this is a high price for this in-demand cat–and it is. What you are paying for, however, is value, from the pristine health of our kittens through regular health testing and veterinarian check-ups to maintenance at the cattery before purchase.

These three factors will impact the price for a purebred Maine Coon kitten:

Selecting the Correct Parent Cats

Meeting the breed standards for purebred Maine Coon cats influences the cost. A purebred cat will require selecting parent cats with desirable traits and no genetic defects. Selecting healthy parent cats will ensure that kittens will be of excellent health. In addition, kittens have to maintain good health with regular health screenings and veterinary care. A reputable cattery usually offers a guarantee upon purchase. Therefore, the credibility of this guarantee must be backed by consistent check-ups to support their words with certainty.

Nutrition

Maine Coon cats are larger than most casts and require more food. Over time, this cost can add up significantly. In addition, they are often given a specialized diet of high-quality food, which carries a higher price tag. Kittens also require adequate grooming and cleaning to maintain hygiene.

Licenses and Certifications

Membership with a reputable cat breeding association such as the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) and The International Cat Association (TICA) ensure that breeders follow ethical breeding practices and standards of care. These organizations helped to establish credibility and build trust. In turn, a breeder can charge for the quality of care they have developed as a standard.

The Ethical Breeder Checklist: Why Our Family-First Approach is Different

Verifiable Registration (TICA/CFA)

Maine Coon Maniacs is registered with both The International Cat Association (TICA) and Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA). Catteries registered with these organizations adhere to strict breed guidelines to maintain the quality and integrity of the cat breed.

Transparent Health Testing

Health testing is non-negotiable. We regularly provide DNA testing for genetic health of cat parents, and kittens. Regular veterinarian visits also ensure that we provide a limited-time guarantee for cat health with complimentary pet insurance for the first 30 days after purchase.

Home-Raised & Socialized

We take pride in ensuring that Maine Coon kittens are socialized from kittenhood to adulthood in a family-friendly environment. This environment will allow them to transition more easily into a new home with one or many people, and varying ages.

Allows Visits (In-Person or Virtual)

At Maine Coon Maniacs, we’re happy to offer visits once you’ve selected a cat you’re interested in adopting. If you’re an out-of-state candidate, you can enjoy a virtual “meet-and-greet” to see the cat in action. Both in-person and virtual visits provide a great opportunity to observe how we maintain our premises, meet our dedicated staff, and learn more about our passion for fostering Maine Coon cats. This insight is crucial for making an informed decision about adopting a kitten from us and will help you ask all the right questions.

Please note: Not all kittens are immediately available for visitation. Only kittens marked with “Available Today” in their profiles are ready for same-day visits.

Provides a Comprehensive Health Guarantee & Contract

We provide a guarantee for a regular history of health testing for common breed-related health conditions that include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), hip dysplasia, and polycystic kidney disease (PKD). We offer health guarantees for every cat before making the trip home with you.

Offers Lifetime Breeder Support

We look at each adoption as an extension of our family-centered ethos and extend lifetime breeder support to each cat parent. We support the health and well-being of your new cat for life and are available for questions, comments, and concerns at any time now or in the future.

The Gentle Giant: Temperament, Appearance, and Personality

Defining the Majestic Look

The laid-back, self-assured disposition of the cute Maine Coon kitten makes them great for small children. They also fare well around other household cats, cat-friendly dogs, and other household pets. They are highly vocal, with their meows soft and musical.

Their frames are muscular and rectangular, with a broad chest. Paws are round and large, with tufts of hair that stick out from the paws. Tufts of hair also stick out from ears as well, like a miniature lynx or bobcat. They have high cheekbones with a distinctly square-shaped muzzle.

The Perfect Fit for Your Lifestyle

Maine Coon cats are larger than most casts and require more food. Over time, this cost can add up significantly. In addition, they are often given a specialized diet of high-quality food, which carries a higher price tag. Kittens also require adequate grooming and cleaning to maintain hygiene.

For Families
Maine Coon cats adapt quickly and can fit into a family and home environment. The patient, gentle, and playful nature of cute Maine Coon kittens and cats makes them an excellent complement to human “siblings”. They are trainable, and can learn new tricks. Their larger size ensures that they are less likely to become harmed if a child handles a cat harshly or in an unsafe manner.

For Young Professionals
Maine Coon cats enjoy being around their owners and showing them affection. While they enjoy giving and experiencing affection, they are also not clingy–so professionals can rest assured that while on-the-job, their Main Coon kitten or cat will keep themselves occupied. For example, you may observe them staring out of the window for hours at a time, at full, slightly resigned attention.

For Retirees
Maine Coon cats carry a naturally affectionate, easy-going temperament that bodes well for seniors looking for unconditional love and companionship on a regular basis. Despite their huge girth, they are low-maintenance cats. Maine Coon cats are also self-sufficient and can keep themselves busy for long periods of time, a great combination for people with limited mobility. A constant companion can contribute to good mental well-being, and help minimize loneliness and feelings of depression through emotional support.

Our Commitment to a Long & Healthy Life

Proactive Genetic Screening

With strict breeding guidelines to establish the highest quality litters, genetic testing helps to avoid harmful illness and conditions such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), polycystic kidney disease (PKD), and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)
HCM is a devastating but preventable disease. That’s why 100% of our breeding Kings and Queens are DNA tested and clear. Cats susceptible to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy risk sudden cardiac arrest before the age of four. A cat with two copies of the mutation for the disease runs the highest risk. A cat carrying one copy of the mutation may have a longer life span–however they may still develop the disease.

Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)
This is a devastating but preventable disease. That’s why 100% of our breeding Kings and Queens are DNA tested and clear. Polycystic kidney disease is a hereditary condition whereby cysts grow on kidneys. The cysts usually start out small and over time, become progressively larger until they impede the functioning of the kidney and cause kidney failure. It takes several years before the cysts become evident. Only one parent has to have the gene that causes PKD to inherit the disease.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA)
This is a devastating but preventable disease. That’s why 100% of our breeding Kings and Queens are DNA tested and clear. Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a condition that impacts neurons of the spinal cord to cause instability and weakness in the muscles. It is a recessive gene. A Maine Coon cat must receive the gene from both parents to inherit the condition. If it receives one set of genes from one parent, the Maine Coon cat will not develop SMA.

Our National Family: Adopting from Anywhere in the USA

Maine Coon Maniacs offers out-of-state adoption of Maine Coon cats, for sale throughout the USA. The process works similarly to in-state adoptions, with certain guidelines relative to each state. An out-of-state adoption requires a deposit prior to completing an application. Out-of-state candidates are placed on a waitlist to have priority once new cats arrive or once the cattery can facilitate a new adoption. To better facilitate an out-of state adoption process, we offer:

Frequently Asked Questions

How are European Maine Coons different?

European Maine Coon cats are bred to look more feral–wilder with more pronounced facial features, fuller ear tufts, and a more strongly defined muzzle. Similar to its American counterpart, the European Maine Coon cat still shares the rectangular body structure with a long, thick coat.

Maine Coon cats are the largest domestic breed of cats. Owners love their large size and gentle, social temperament. They generally grow to weigh between 19 and 30 pounds. They also average between 1.5 and 3 feet in length.

We recommend waiting a few days to a week before letting other pets meet the new Maine Coon kitten. This wait period can help minimize potential aggression another animal can feel towards another they deem a threat. If the pet is another cat, bring the cat home without alerting the original cat of a new cat’s arrival. Switch rooms, allowing the original cat to stay in the new cat’s room to sense an “intruder” and acclimate to the smell of the new cat. Introduce the two felines after time has been given for them to acclimate to the presence of one another. One cat may attempt to assert dominance, but over the course of several weeks, they will learn to tolerate one another’s presence and eventually co-exist. For other pets, a slow introduction is also recommended. The two animals should be able to smell and sense one another at a distance. Barriers such as carriers, bay gates, and closed doors can help facilitate the process.
