Our Family's Polydactyl Kittens: The Maine Coon Maniacs Collection

A Maine Coon polydactyl is a cat with more than the traditional number of toes. Most cats have 18 toes, with four on each hind paw and five on each front paw. Maine Coon polydactyls are born with extra digits on either their front or back, or both sets of paws. This genetic trait is referred to as “polydactyly” and is found most often in Maine Coon cats, most likely an evolutionary trait developed to help Maine Coon cats better navigate the harsh New England winters–as they were originally outdoor felines native to the Northeastern states.

Maine Coon Maniacs is a reputable cattery with Maine Coon kittens for sale in Colorado.

What Makes a Polydactyl Maine Coon So Special?

Gentle Giant with "Snowshoe Paws"

The extra “toes” on the paws of Polydactyl Maine Coon cats gives the paws a thick, mitten-like look. They resemble “snowshoes” and provide extra traction and balance for navigating in the snow without sinking. At one point more than 40% of Maine Coon kittens were polydactyl, before the trait was associated with witchcraft, and led to the persecution of these cats in Europe. Today, breeders are reclaiming this natural trait, proof of their wild, genetically adaptable, outdoor Northern US roots.

The Science of "Extra Beans"

Polydactyly is a benign genetic variation that does not impact the health and wellness of a cat. It is a naturally dominant gene. Rather than being a defect, these additional digits originally allowed a wild Maine Coon cat to grip trees and other surfaces more firmly, and walk across the snow, as their hunting prowess was enhanced with extra “beans” to complement the rough winter environment.

The Polydactyl Advantage

We can’t deny that the extra digits make Polydactyl Maine Coon kittens simply adorable. In addition, mitten-like paws help the cat to climb and hunt more efficiently. The trait does not harm the cat. Instead it gives them a firmer grip on surfaces like trees, floors, and fences. It also allows for more nimble movement that can be beneficial when hunting for prey. Polydactyl cats may be more adept hunters due to this trait that improves grip, balance, and movement.

Health & Care

Special consideration should be given to maintain the polydactyl paws and nails. Extra “toes” allow for the possibility of more ingrown and overgrown nails, as well as issues with paw hygiene. So we recommend trimming nails regularly, and checking paws for debris–extra toes mean extra space where debris can accumulate.

Frequently Asked Questions about Polydactyl Maine Coons

Are polydactyl Maine Coons rare or more expensive?

Polydactyl Maine Coons, while once common, are now considered rare and higher priced than their commonly-toed counterparts. The “extra toes” variant is actually a genetic mutation, and while once widespread, breeding practices have reduced the frequency of polydactyly in the breed. This rarity, combined with their unique appearance and historical connection to the Maine Coon breed, can lead to a higher price for polydactyl cats.

Yes, the price for Polydactyl Maine Coon cats is usually higher due to the rarity of the polydactyly trait. In the breed’s earlier years in New England, nearly one in two Maine Coon cats was born with this genetic mutation. Extra toes would be useful in establishing balance, grip, and dexterity on the snow and on trees. Yet today, the trait is rare and considered unique due to its usefulness for a Maine Coon cat’s day-to-day lifestyle whether out or indoors.

Breeders are re-establishing the polydactyly trait once commonly found in Maine Coon cats, but due to their association with witchcraft (think Salem for kittens minus misogyny), many were persecuted and the numbers of kittens with this special trait greatly reduced. Today humans know better and thus now do better to reclaim this unique trait once prominent among Maine Coon cats.

Polydactyl Maine Coon cats do not usually experience health problems with extra toes. Maine Coon cats were originally outdoor cats so an extra toe or two (or three) could be considered an evolutionary trait that allowed them to navigate more easily in harsh winter climate customary to their breed origin location in the Northeastern United States. Basic polydactyl cat care includes trimming nails of each toe regularly to prevent ingrown nails.

Yes, TICA, The International Cat Association (TICA), recognizes polydactyly as a variant cat within the Maine Coon cat breed. Both the Maine Coon cat and Polydactyl Maine Coon cat are both registered with the organization and can compete in competitions. We are a proud member of The International Cat Association (TICA).

While we do not breed cats, we work with licensed breeders that follow ethical breeding practices. We work with breeders that test the genetic makeup of parent cats to ensure healthy kittens and no incidence of diseases prone to Maine Coon cats. We raise young kittens in our home with our family to provide ample socialization around a diverse array of human beings, from young children to older adults. In addition, we maintain regular veterinarian care and vaccination requirements. Once a kitten is selected, we invite the applicant to visit the cattery to observe firsthand the upkeep of the kittens and environment in which they are being raised.

Yes, we offer statewide service throughout Colorado, as well as out-of-state deliveries. If local pick-up is not available, we can arrange for pet transport. We do not cover shipping costs, unfortunately.
